How a job runs

Our approach to building and refurbishment

Every job we run follows the same five steps: a free survey, the price, the build handled by our own team with specialists we bring in and manage, one point of contact throughout, and a proper handover with aftercare. It runs the same way on a pub fit-out working to a reopening date as it does on a house. Whoever is on site, one firm stays answerable for the whole result. Here is what each step actually involves.

For the company background, see About SG Refurb.

The five steps

01

Free survey

We come out and look at the job properly. We measure up, check the things that matter on older Godstone stock — solid walls, original timbers, roof condition, where services run — and talk through what you want from the finished result. On a trading site we also work out what has to stay open, what can be shut off, and how long the space can realistically be out of use. There is no charge and no obligation. What you get out of it is a straight read on what is realistic and where the awkward bits are likely to be, before you have committed to anything.

02

The price, before work starts

You then get the price, broken down far enough to see what each part of the work costs and why it is there. Nothing is hidden inside a single round number. If you want to drop something or stage the work, you can see exactly what that changes. You know what you are paying for before a single tool comes out of the van.

Step 03 — What sets us apart

Our team builds it, every trade managed by us

Our own settled team does the building work — groundworks, brickwork, carpentry, plastering and the fitting of kitchens and bathrooms. For specialist trades like electrics, roofing, decorating and fencing we bring in firms we have worked with for years and manage them ourselves, so you are dealing with us rather than chasing a different outfit for every part of the job. Because we run the whole programme, the sequencing is handled in one place: our plasterer knows when first fix is done, the decorator is booked in for when the plaster is dry. Fewer gaps, fewer hold-ups, and the responsibility stays with one firm.

04

One point of contact

You deal with one person for the whole job. You are not chasing three different trades for answers or wondering who is turning up when. Your contact knows the project inside out, keeps you posted on progress, and is the person to ring if something needs sorting. One number, one conversation, start to finish.

05

Handover and aftercare

At the end we walk the finished work with you, deal with any snags, and hand over the relevant certification where it applies. On a commercial job that includes the paperwork the operator needs in place before the doors open again.

We are based on Godstone High Street and we are not going anywhere, so if a question comes up weeks later you are talking to the same firm that did the work, not a number that has gone dead.

One firm, answerable for the whole result

Keeping our own settled team on the building work, and managing the specialists we bring in ourselves, is a deliberate choice. It means quality and timing stay under our control, and it means one firm is answerable for the whole result rather than leaving you to work out whose job it was. Pricing the job properly up front keeps you in charge of the budget at every stage. It is a way of working that has to hold up in two places at once: on a pub or bar fit-out where the reopening date is fixed and every day shut is money lost, and on the older houses round here — period village cottages, Victorian and Edwardian properties, the stock you find across this part of Surrey — where surprises behind the plaster are the norm and clear pricing matters.

How a job runs with us

Q.01Do you use subcontractors?

Our own settled team does the building work — brickwork, carpentry, plastering, groundworks and the fitting of kitchens and bathrooms. Specialist trades such as electrics, roofing, decorating and fencing are brought in and managed by us. Either way one firm stays answerable for the whole job, from the first survey to final handover, so there is only ever one firm to talk to about it.

Q.02Do you work on commercial premises as well as homes?

Yes. Pub, bar and hospitality fit-out for national operators is a core part of what we do, alongside home refurbishment, extensions and roofing. The same five steps apply to both — the difference on a trading site is that the programme is built around the reopening date.

Q.03Is the survey and quote really free?

Yes. The initial survey and the quote are free and carry no obligation. How far the price breaks down follows the job — a schedule of works on a fit-out, room by room on a house, a straight price on a small one — but it is always written down before anything begins.

Q.04How does the quote work?

You receive it before work starts, broken down item by item rather than as a single figure. That way you can see exactly what is included, and if you want to stage the work or drop something, you can see precisely what it changes.

Q.05Who do I deal with during the job?

One point of contact for the whole project. They know the job, keep you updated and are the person to ring if anything needs sorting, so you are never chasing separate trades for answers.
