SG Refurbishments is a building and fit-out firm at 27 High Street, Godstone, at the foot of the North Downs in Surrey. We have been trading since 2005, and the work splits two ways: commercial work across the South East, from reactive maintenance to full fit-outs, and building work on homes within about ten miles of the office. Who we are

Godstone is a historic village on the A25, with a green and a pond at the foot of the North Downs, and the housing reflects it: solid Victorian and Edwardian properties with high ceilings and generous hallways, sitting alongside post-war and newer stock. We have worked on every type of them since 2005, so we know how these houses are put together and where the surprises tend to hide once the plaster comes off.

One firm, answerable for the whole job

We manage every trade on the job, so there is one firm to deal with from the first survey to the day we hand it back, and one number to ring while the work is running and afterwards. If something needs putting right, you are not left working out whose job it was.

Who we work for

On the commercial side we work for pub and bar operators, landlords, property teams, managing agents, housing associations, schools and healthcare providers. Pubs and bars are the work we do most of, usually while the site is still trading.

The survey

We come out and look at the job properly. We measure up, check the things that matter on older Godstone stock — solid walls, original timbers, roof condition, where services run — and talk through what you want from the finished result.

The price, before work starts

You then get the price in writing, itemised so you can see what each part of the work costs and why it is there. Nothing is hidden inside a single round number, and you know exactly what you are paying for before we start.

We build it, every trade managed by us

We manage every trade on the job, so you deal with us rather than chasing a different firm for every part of the work. The order of work is planned in one place: the plasterer knows when first fix is done, and the decorator is booked for when the plaster is dry.

One point of contact

You deal with one person for the whole job. You are not chasing three different trades for answers or wondering who is turning up when. Your contact knows the project inside out, keeps you posted on progress, and is the person to ring if something needs sorting. One number, one conversation, start to finish.

Handover and aftercare

At the end we walk the finished work with you, deal with any snags, and hand over the relevant certification where it applies. On a commercial job that includes the paperwork the operator needs in place before the doors open again.

What we cover

Commercial fit-out and maintenance across the South East

Pubs and bars are the work we do most of — trading refurbishments, bar builds, back of house and full interiors, handed back ready to trade on the date agreed. We also work in offices, retail, healthcare, education and housing associations, and take on framework work, heritage buildings, out-of-hours works, planned and reactive maintenance, and refurbishment and fit-out. Commercial work is priced as a written schedule, item by item, so a property team can check it against their own numbers.

Building, refurbishment and extensions for homeowners in Surrey

On homes we take on kitchens, bathrooms, extensions, renovations, roofing, design and build, heritage, new build and general maintenance. Every job is surveyed before it is priced, and the quote is itemised so you can see what each part costs. The trades we cover are bathrooms, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, extensions, fencing, heating, kitchens, plumbing and roofing, and we manage every trade on the job.

Straightforward work and high specification work

We do both. A straightforward job is a replacement or a repair to a standard specification, done properly. A high specification job is bespoke design, premium materials and a full design and build. Same firm, same paperwork, either way.

Insurance

We hold a full set of insurance across several policies, with over £20 million of cover between them. That includes £10 million public liability cover, for injury to anyone or damage to property while we work; £10 million employers’ liability cover, for the people who work for us; and £10 million professional indemnity cover, for the advice, design and specification we provide. Certificates for each policy are available on request before work starts.

Reactive and emergency call-outs

We take reactive and emergency work as well as planned work, on commercial and domestic jobs. Reactive commercial cover runs all year round, bank holidays included. The office is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Where we work

Work on homes is within about ten miles of the Godstone office. Commercial work covers the whole of the South East, from Southampton and Portsmouth round to Brighton and Dover, and past London as far as Oxford and Colchester.

We have moved — the office is now on Godstone High Street

SG Refurbishments has moved from Caterham to 27 High Street, Godstone. The team is the same; the office is simply closer to most of the homes we work on.

SG's SSIP registration is under way, and the firm is taking on new work — commercial operators and property teams, and homeowners near Godstone.

The kinds of home we work on

The housing round here mostly falls into a few sorts, and each throws up something different once you open it: period cottages with frames that have moved, Victorian and Edwardian solid walls, post-war stock where the work is about layout, and listed buildings that need listed building consent before anything changes.
