Carpenter and Joiner in Woldingham (CR3)
Woldingham is large detached houses on big mature plots, much of it set within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, from the village centre and Station Road out to the private and gated roads. Rooms in houses like these are generous, and joinery that would look right anywhere else can look undersized once it is in them.
Scale is a decision, not a detail
In a big room the proportions of joinery have to be set deliberately.
A skirting section that suits a terrace looks thin against a high wall, panelling laid out to a standard panel width reads as busy, and a run of built-in storage that stops short of the ceiling leaves a band of nothing above it that the eye goes straight to. The same applies to a staircase, where the handrail section, the newel and the spacing of the spindles are what give it presence or take it away. None of this costs much more in material. It costs in setting out, and in drawing the elevation before anything is cut, which is a great deal cheaper to change than a fitted run of timber already screwed to a wall.
Built in the room, not delivered to it
Large pieces of built-in furniture are not carried in finished. A full-height wardrobe run, a library wall or a fitted study is made as components and assembled in the room, which is also the only sensible way to deal with walls and ceilings that are not perfectly true over a long run. It means the fitting stage takes longer than people expect and the finish is better for it, with no packers showing along a long top rail and no gap opening up where a wall bows away. Anything that has to be reached later, whether a stopcock, a cable run or a service, is designed with access rather than built over. Our own joiners do the making and the fitting. The decorator who finishes the timber is a specialist we bring in and manage, so the painting is scheduled around the joinery rather than the other way round.
Repairing the timber that is already there
Where a house carries older joinery it is usually worth keeping, and repair is the better trade than replacement.
A dropped door joint, a split panel, a worn stair tread or a length of moulding lost to damp can each be cut back and new timber let in, matched for section and grain so the repair disappears once it is painted. Where a profile is no longer made, one can be milled from an offcut lifted off the building. External timber is worth looking at in the same visit, because decay starts at joints and end grain where water can sit rather than spreading evenly, and a small repair caught early is a fraction of the work that a late one becomes.

Q.01Will fitted furniture look right in a large room?
It will if the proportions are set for that room. Skirting depth, panel widths and the height a run finishes at all need deciding for the space rather than lifted from a standard.
